Looking for a small business operation to start.
If i register my domain name with a particular web host, do i need to keep them as a host as i build my site?
I highly recommend NOT getting your domain name registration and your web hosting from the same company.
It%26#039;s kind of like putting all your eggs in one basket.
Setting up separate accounts for each is not all that difficult. Register the domain name first, then get the web hosting. Then log into your domain name account and point it to the Domain Name Servers (DNS) for your hosting account.

I%26#039;m pretty sure you don%26#039;t have to. For a while I had a domain name with bravenet.com, and I think I remember reading on their site that you can change hosts and keep the domain name.
Reply:yes
b/c all the info you have on your site
will be stored on their servers
so u need to keep paying a monthly or w/e fee
Reply:No, it%26#039;s your domain name. You not only can use it with the host of your choice, but you can even switch registrars if necessary.
Edit:
There%26#039;s more than one registrar for domain names. Once upon a time, it was Network Solutions and they were the one and only registrar. However there are a bunch of them these days, like godaddy.com and dotster.com. Those are the two I can think off the top of my head because I%26#039;ve used them.
For a complete list (it%26#039;s kind of overwhelming) check out the ICANN link in the source list below.
Also, Wikipedia has a good article about domain name registrars (link below).
Reply:Some places require you to keep them as their host, or should I say..the fee that you actually pay to register your domain also usually includes the fee of the host account too! But I know you can pay extra to change host. Hope this helps.
Godaddy is a pretty good site to use for starting a small business. I got the basic Website Tonight Free Account that came with the basic package and it works well. Only problem I%26#039;ve had is it only allows for 50 mb of diskspace which may cause problems if you have lots of pictures, music, or videos to add. Just don%26#039;t let them trick you into buying all the extras. Especially the Traffic Blazer Program. I found the program very confusing to operate and tech support was no help!
Reply:No, not necessarily - depending on what company you used to register our domain, some can be shady and force you to use their hosting services as well. To avoid this, register your domain name with Yahoo, or GoDaddy, or someone Reputable. Then once you have a domain name, you can use whatever hosting company you want. I%26#039;ll use Yahoo as an example. If you host your website at HostingXYZ, you would go into Yahoo%26#039;s control panel, select %26quot;Domain Control Panel%26quot; and then change the %26quot;NameServer%26quot; to whatever HostingXYZ tells you the settings are.
The other thing you can do which most people don;t realize, is use the Web Space that comes with your Comcast, or Verizon Internet access account. Many give you a decent amount of space. You can create a web site on www.comcast.net/~yourUserName then you can go into Yahoo (if thats where you registered the domain name) and select Domain Forward. Then type in the Comcast URL, and select %26quot;Masked%26quot; Forward, which means when someone types in your registered domain name, the web site you uploaded onto Comcast will show up, but the Name will still say your domain name. I hope I didn%26#039;t confuse you with this - its actually very simple, but sometimes hard to explain in a post like this. Yahoo has very good Help Pages if you get lost.
Hope this helps.

Reply:I have three business websites. So I know what you are going through.
You do not have to host with whomever you register your domain with. I use GoDaddy. But there are a number of others that are good. GoDaddy has Website Tonight which is a fast way to get your web site up and running. They also has Hosting Connection which gives you a one click way to install a number of free programs.
Feel free to contact me and I will be happy to give you some pointers.
Reply:You do not need to do so, you can find step by step guide on how to create a website at websites like http://oktutorial.com/webdesign.htm
